Foster Kittens Cuddling while awaiting forever home. Many cute pictures again this week, with, of course, my favorite of me and Butter Chubs. Hey, what’s the old saying, “if you can’t beat ‘em….”

Two of the kittens were taking turns falling into the bathtub when it was quite full of water this past week. Mom is in the habit of a morning bath. One of the boys fell in while she was in her bath one morning. She isn’t sure which one, as he was into the tub, out of the tub, and down the hall throwing water in all directions beforeCari's Foster Kittens Enjoying the View she could determine who it was! She then spotted Misspit on the edge of the tub one of the following days and warned her that she was going to go in, but, you know girls….Mom was in the office when she heard the splash, then a little more splashing. She was just getting ready to go in for a rescue when poor Misspit came running down the hallway, leaving four rather prominent puddles every place her paws hit the ground, which wasn’t often. I think word has finally gotten around since no one else has gone in lately, although Drew loves to walk the edge of the tub every morning. I have a feeling he’s going to be the little daredevil of the bunch.

Needless to say, they’re STILL here. I just wonder how long this is going to go on, although I hate to admit I’m getting quite fond of the little ones.

Pittsburgh Kitty AdoptionThe babies are still here and doing well. As you can see, I actually have been in to visit some with them. We had a big weekend, as we had to move them from one office to another, within the house, of course. Just shortly after moving them, Mom went downstairs to start dinner. Within no time at all, they heard Dutch E. Beagle crying in that way of hers that says, “Hey, it’s a BABY!” One quick glance confirmed that, yes, one of them had somehow escaped her new surroundings and was giving herself a tour of the kitchen with Dutchi following along like a mother hen! As soon as Mom got this one back into the new space, Dad spied another “escapee” hiding out in the bSewickley Kittensathroom! Well, the towel that had been hanging over their board that blocks the doorway was quickly removed and that escape route was nixed. However, Mom found another one roaming around this morning just after breakfast, still unsure how that happened. They are VERY anxious to get out and about, and we are looking for permanent homes. They have pet names - Drew is the little grey and white boy, Misspit is the little white and dark tabby female, Cuddle Buns is the grey boy, and Butter Chubs is the plump little grey and white girl. How can you resist? Dad is hoping someone doesn’t resist, as we are starting on month two of this, and they are now in HIS office, escaping like crazy every time someone walks into the room!!

Uncle Beajhle checking out the new Foster KittenAs some of you may know, Uncle Beajhle is the shelter columnist for the Hancock County Courier. For the next couple of weeks, you can read about the lifestyle changes from an uncle's point of view when Mom decided to "foster" babies from the shelter. Beajhle himself came from the shelter about six years ago when he had developed a cold that he just couldn't seem to kick. Of course, Mom brought him home under the pretense of "fostering him until he got better." However, we all know how that goes in my house...

Here are his tails, oops tales, from an uncle point of view.

Mom came home with a neat surprise after picture taking at the shelter recently – 4 baby The foster kittens in a cuddle ballkittens!! I am officially Uncle B, foster uncle. Now, the female felines of the house are not too crazy about the whole idea, so they are not aware of my new status. (I have to play tough around them.) The dogs, however, don’t have one problem with this. Brother Felchen seems a little intimidated by these tiny little things, as am I most of the time. But sister Dutchi Beagle, yes, Beagle, DOG, not cat, took to them right away, I guess remembering her days as a mother. Now, as of last night, my sister Sujee, another DOG, thinks they belong to her. This could get interesting…..

Boot's Story - A Foster Care Diary PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 26 November 2008 05:00

HCAS Foster Cat, Boots, waiting for that special someone to call her very ownBoots came to me on a hot summer day in July, with five one-week old kittens. She was a gorgeous, but very tired, black and white short haired cat with striking green eyes. I learned from my foster care coordinator that Boots had given birth to her kittens on July fourth, and needed a quiet home to raise them and try to get a little rest herself.

Throughout the summer, my family got to see the kittens grow up and go through many firsts, like walking (then running), eating their first foods, learning to use the litter box, and finally, playing. Even though most of our attention was focused on the kittens, I was beginning to get a good sense of Boot’s personality as well.

For the first week or two, she only left the kittens to eat or use the litter box, but as the kittens grew less needy, I could see that Boots had interests of her own. Turns out that she loved to play just as much as her kittens did, and would jump in to grab a string or a toy just as readily as they did. She also liked to “read” over my shoulder, since I would often go into the room where I kept them to read or do work.

Then we decided to introduce her to our dog, Rusty. We let him in the room to meet her and she reached out a paw to touch his nose. From that day on, Rusty wanted to go with me every time I checked on Boots so that he could give her and her kittens a kiss hello.

Finally the time came when there was only Boots and her one remaining kitten, Layla. A woman had seen Layla on PetFinder and wanted to adopt her. I took both of the cats to PetSmart so that the woman could meet Layla, and it was love at first sight. Layla had found her forever home!

The shelter’s foster coordinator and I decided to leave Boots at PetSmart so that she could finally get a home of her own as well. Unfortunately, the combination of losing her last kitten and being in a new place was too much for Boots and she became depressed and wouldn’t eat.

I made the decision then to open my home back up to Boots, and today she is here with me while she waits for someone to choose her. She is being well-cared for, but she doesn’t have the run of the house because my other cat doesn’t like her, as much as Boots tries. She would love a permanent family and she gets along great with other animals and seems to love every person she comes across, as long as they will take a minute to give her a scratch behind the ears.

Boots has come a long way, but her story isn’t over! If you think you could be her happy ending, contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . I know she would love to meet you!

Orange cat on window boxWell, as you can see by the pictures, they are still here…..I think we are starting week four. Still very active. Playful, eating a lot, running a lot, sleeping a lot, and using the litter box a lot. Just like us older cats, they do love to sleep together, all wrapped up in each other, as you can see in one of the photos. Sometimes they sleep alone, like on the window seat. And sometimes we’re not sure where they’re sleeping….And sometimes they look outside at the great world beyond and wonder what is going on and what the future holds for them.

Well, Dad SAYS they’re getting their eviction papers soon, but then he WAS sitting in there with them last night, letting them run all over him, literally!! They will probably stay here until adoption time. Even though I haven’t been the best of uncles, I really don’t mind them since we didn’t use that room anyway….And my sister Mazi is going to really miss them if they get adopted, as she has had the greatest time with them. I think she is even secretly supplying them with bags of catnip by the way they carry on at times!! We may just have to keep the last one that doesn’t get adopted – just to make Mazi happy.

And remember, fostering is all about food, water, and lots of love. Do you have some to spare?
